Water fasting is something that has existed for many years often for religious and healing benefits it is only now that people are using the concept to achieve weight loss. When done correctly water fasting is harmless to the body and can be very beneficial. Preparation is key when embarking on a water fast it is often advised that before embarking on a longer fast that you try a shorter fast of 3 days and then to build up to the longer fast. It is important to prepare the body to go into a fast and also breaking the fast in a safe manner. Water fasting can be a difficult task and requires a lot of mental determination and self discipline. There are numerous benefits to water fasting from an increase in energy levels, cleaning of toxins from the body to a clearer skin complexion and not to mention mental clarity. Many people have the ignorant view that water fasting is unhealthy and that by water fasting you are starving the body. Although water fasting is not recommended for all and if you have any existing medical conditions it is recommended that you consult a doctor before embarking on a water fast.
Starting your Water Fast
2-3 days Before you start on a water fast it is advised that you cut down on foods high in salt, hydrogenated fat, sugar, caffeine, flour and processed foods. As this will make the fast a more comfortable one it may be worth following a raw foods diet for the first few days as it will reduce the side effects that are associated with water fasting. eg Headaches, nausea, and general unwell feeling
Rest
It is important to rest while fasting as for the first few days can cause discomfort and lack of physical energy.
Water intake
Drink the highest quality water as there can be toxins in tap water however if you are unable to do so I recommend boiling water beforehand. Aim to drink at least 8 pints of water daily and drink when hungry.
Support
Make sure you have someone who you can share this journey with as you are least likely to achieve your goal if you go it alone. If you feel you are unable to talk to those close to you it may be worth joining a fasting group or forum to gain support and additional advice.
Be Safe
Have realistic goals of how long you would like to fast for however you must listen to your body and if you are experiencing any worrying symptoms from fasting it is recommended that you break the fast as your body is telling you that it needs other forms of nourishment and the fast is becoming unsafe.
Breaking Fast
It is very important that you break your fast in a safe manner. Your body has been in hibernation so slowly reintroduce your body to food start with raw foods, fruit juices.
