My understanding is that Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a disorder that affects the way in which a woman's ovaries function. Polycystic ovaries are numerous cysts the cysts are undeveloped follicles which contain eggs that haven't developed correctly. Anovulation (where the follicle containing the egg doesn't rupture) is common for women suffering with PCOS.

Causes of PCOS
Women who are overweight are more likely to suffer from PCOS although women who are of a healthy weight are also suffer with the syndrome. It is also believed that insulin may play a role in the cause of PCOS. Many women who have too much insulin in their bodies which causes the increase in the male hormone testosterone additional being overweight affects the amount of insulin that the body produces.
Treatment
Unfortunately there is no cure for PCOS however there are medications that can help with the symptoms of PCOS. Infertility which is often a result of the syndrome can be treated with ovulation inducing drugs and also surgical procedure may be advised which involves drilling of the ovaries with the hope that the procedure will restore regular ovulation. However if you are overweight losing weight is often advised as this can help to restore menstrual cycles, improve insulin sensitivity and relieve symptoms associated with the syndrome.GP's may prescribe a medication called Metformin which is used in both PCOS and Diabetes suffers. Metformin is used to lower insulin and cholesterol and also improves metabolism in women who are insulin resistant. This helps to regulate menstrual cycles start ovulation and lower the risk of miscarriage in women with PCOS.
